Project

The Meducators Podcast: Scaling enablement through strategic storytelling

Role

Podcast Producer + Content Strategist

Challenge

The idea of a podcast was conceived as an innovative addition to existing programming, but lacked strategic positioning and production know-how. While engaging, it wasn't clear how it would add value beyond novelty. There was no defined workflow, tech setup, or purpose within existing enablement initiatives. I stepped in to own it all from strategy and content to recording, editing, and distribution, well beyond my original scope.

Why are we doing this?

Medical educators across a vast geographic region shape the next generation of physicians while maintaining demanding clinical practices, making traditional in-person professional development challenging to scale. Yet, they needed flexible content that could integrate into their existing routines.

I worked with senior leadership to assess strategic positioning, proposing a spectrum of engagement framework to accommodate participation levels across audiences.

Key insight: Reframe the podcast as one piece of a broader engagement strategy. The podcast became a low-barrier way to reach busy physician-educators during commutes, between patients, or in downtime, creating genuine peer connections when other formats couldn't.

From strategy to production

The project had solid vision but required operational development to become functional. I treated this as both content creation and system architecture.

  • Created guest guidelines covering expectations, technical requirements, and time commitments

  • Developed a focus statement framework for identifying episode themes and value propositions for listeners

Created a structured interview arc approach to conversation design with beginning, middle, and end progression

  • This was the steepest learning curve — podcasting platforms, audio editing, quality assurance protocols and distribution workflows

Bringing it to life

  • Recording setup: Multi-track recording with separate audio channels for each participant

Audio editing: Noise reduction, level balancing, and content editing

Quality control: Multiple review stages including technical and content approval processes

Export optimization: Multiple format creation for different distribution platforms

  • Cover art design: Professional podcast artwork aligned with institutional branding

Sound design: Custom intro/outro segments, transition effects, and audio branding elements

Episode graphics: Consistent visual templates for social media and promotional materials

Short-form content: Teaser clips, quote cards, and promotional snippets for cross-platform distribution

  • Episode descriptions: SEO-optimized summaries with key takeaways and guest information

Marketing materials: Newsletter content, social media posts, and cross-promotional materials

Promotional strategy: Targeted outreach to specific user demographics and program integration

  • Distribution strategy: Partnered with institutional media network on multi-platform approach

Recording platform solutions: Implemented backup systems when primary platforms encountered technical issues

Outcomes & Takeaway

Owning this project required learning fluency to quickly acquire new competencies and deliver results beyond an instructional design scope. It resulted in a complete production system that launched the first faculty development podcast on the UBC Medicine Learning Network with a subscriber base of 200,000+.

  • Propelled an early-stage initiative by building complete production infrastructure from concept to distribution

  • Delivered sustainable systems enabling ongoing production

  • Demonstrated design versatility across disciplines while maintaining quality standards

Impact

What began as a loose idea became a fully realized production system, driven by rapid learning and design versatility. My work helped:

  • Launch the first faculty development podcast on an institutional network

  • Build a scalable pipeline supporting episodes beyond the pilot

  • Elevate content quality through interviews arcs and editorial post-production

  • Expand reach with SEO-optimized copy, branded visuals, and multi-platform distribution
